When to plant and prune Star jasmine
Star jasmine flowers from mid June to late August and the dates below cover planting, flowering and the pruning window.
Planting, flowering and pruning by region
Star jasmine is grown to the calendar rather than to the frost, so the same dates apply across the whole UK and every region below reads the same. Where a plant’s timings do follow the frost, Plot shifts them from the Midlands and Lowland Wales baseline using Met Office average frost dates.

Growing notes
Twining stems have nothing to grip with, so fix horizontal wires or a trellis to the wall before planting. Slow growing and richly scented, so it earns a place beside a door or seat on a south or west wall.

Feeding
Container plants: liquid feed through spring and summer; border plants need little more than a spring mulch.
Pruning group
Light maintenance prune in spring only: shorten wayward shoots and tie in. Renovate by cutting back by two-thirds in spring.
Winter protection
In colder or frost-prone gardens mulch thickly over the root zone in autumn, wrap containers, and cover with fleece in harsh weather; in very cold areas grow it in a pot and bring it under cover for winter.
What usually goes wrong
- scale insects
- red spider mite
- leaf reddening in cold weather
- phytophthora root rot on wet soils
