When to plant and prune Winter jasmine
Winter jasmine flowers from mid November to early March and the dates below cover planting, flowering and the pruning window.
Planting, flowering and pruning by region
Winter jasmine is grown to the calendar rather than to the frost, so the same dates apply across the whole UK and every region below reads the same. Where a plant’s timings do follow the frost, Plot shifts them from the Midlands and Lowland Wales baseline using Met Office average frost dates.

Growing notes
Unscented but tough, giving yellow flowers on bare stems from midwinter, and it will grow on a cold north wall. It has no means of climbing, so tie the lax stems to wires or let it sprawl as an informal hedge or ground cover.

Feeding
An annual spring mulch is enough; no routine feeding needed in the ground.
Pruning: what to avoid
Prune as soon as the flowers fade in spring. Pruning later in summer or in autumn removes the shoots that would carry next winter's flowers.
Pruning group
Prune in spring immediately after flowering: remove dead or damaged shoots, tie in new shoots and shorten flowered sideshoots to about 5cm.
What usually goes wrong
- lax unsupported growth
- loss of vigour if never pruned
