When to plant and prune Summer jasmine (common jasmine)
Summer jasmine (common jasmine) flowers from mid June to late August and the dates below cover planting, flowering and the pruning window.
Planting, flowering and pruning by region
Summer jasmine (common jasmine) is grown to the calendar rather than to the frost, so the same dates apply across the whole UK and every region below reads the same. Where a plant’s timings do follow the frost, Plot shifts them from the Midlands and Lowland Wales baseline using Met Office average frost dates.

Growing notes
Vigorous twiner that needs large, sturdy supports — wires or a strong trellis on a warm wall, an arch or a pergola. The scent is strongest in the evening, so plant it near a door or seating area.

Pruning: what to avoid
Prune after flowering, not in spring: the sideshoots carry this summer's flowers, so shortening them in late winter removes the display. If you must thin it in late winter, take out a whole stem at the base instead.
Pruning group
Prune just after flowering in late summer or early autumn: cut flowered stems back to a strong sideshoot and thin congested growth.
What usually goes wrong
- aphids
- outgrowing its support
- frost damage to young growth in exposed gardens
