When to harvest Gooseberry in the UK

Gooseberry is planted rather than sown from seed, so the dates below are harvest dates.

Family Grossulariaceae · rotation group none · Easy to grow

Harvest dates by region

Gooseberry shows the same dates across the whole UK, so every region below reads the same. Where a plant’s timings do follow the frost, Plot shifts them from the Midlands and Lowland Wales baseline using Met Office average frost dates.

Growing notes

Plant from late autumn to early spring; established bushes give 2.5-5.5kg a year and crop for at least 10-15 years. Thin-pick green fruits for cooking in June and leave the rest to sweeten into July and August, and watch for gooseberry sawfly larvae, which can strip a bush in days.

Pruning: what to avoid

Gooseberries are pruned twice a year, in winter to shape an open-centred goblet and again in summer to shorten sideshoots and build fruiting spurs. They fruit on a permanent framework, so never cut old stems to ground level as you would a blackcurrant, and keep the centre open so you can pick between the spines.

gooseberry (permanent spur framework, goblet bush)

Bare-root season

Bare-root stock is lifted and sold while dormant, from late October to late March. Container-grown plants can go in at other times of year, but bare-root is cheaper and establishes well.

How long until it crops

Expect the first worthwhile pick about 2 years after planting, and a productive life of roughly 15 years.
