When to plant and prune Deutzia
Deutzia flowers from late May to mid June and the dates below cover planting, flowering and the pruning window.
Planting, flowering and pruning by region
Deutzia is grown to the calendar rather than to the frost, so the same dates apply across the whole UK and every region below reads the same. Where a plant’s timings do follow the frost, Plot shifts them from the Midlands and Lowland Wales baseline using Met Office average frost dates.

Growing notes
Arching stems carrying panicles of small starry pink or white flowers from late spring into early summer - a good, quietly reliable shrub for a small garden. Grows in full sun or partial shade. D. x rosea is compact at around 1m, while D. x hybrida cultivars such as 'Mont Rose' can reach 1.5-2m.

Pruning: what to avoid
Deutzia flowers on growth made the previous year, so prune straight after flowering. Winter pruning removes the flowering wood and leaves a shrub of leaves only - it is in the same after-flowering group as philadelphus and weigela.
Pruning group
Pruned as RHS group 2: after flowering cut flowered stems back to strong young shoots and remove a proportion of the oldest stems at the base
What usually goes wrong
- late frost damage to young growth
- congested unproductive old stems if never thinned
