Sowing and harvest dates by region

Chinese broccoli (kai lan) is grown to the calendar rather than to the frost, so the same dates apply across the whole UK and every region below reads the same. Where a plant’s timings do follow the frost, Plot shifts them from the Midlands and Lowland Wales baseline using Met Office average frost dates.

Growing notes

Sow indoors from mid-spring or outdoors between April and September; stems, leaves, buds and flowers are all edible and florets form after about ten weeks, generally July to November. Mature plants take light frost, and cloches can stretch picking into winter.
